Foursquare is a social application that allows it's users to check-in to places using their mobile phones via the Foursquare App (links to the app are below). Having started a few years back Foursquare has millions of users across the globe who check-in to millions of venues every day. Now, the interesting part is that users are rewarded for check-ins by accumulating points and badges. Users can even get awarded the title of mayor if they check-in so many times. Some would see this as being pointless but Foursquare is a great way for users to share tips about venues which in turn creates a very comprehensive guide for users visiting places they have never been to before.
Foursquare not only benefits consumers but businesses also as they can see who is visiting them and some can even offer incentives such as discounts for their most loyal customers. A lot of businesses in Scarborough are already on Foursquare but I feel a lot more need to get up to speed with how to utilise it for their business. If you own a business do you know who the mayor of your venue is?
Foursquare uses GPS on your phone to locate where you are and automatically recommends places nearby which may be of interest. You can also search for a type of venue like a restaurant or cinema. You can then read peoples tips to help choose the best one for you.
Foursquare also allows businesses to create pages just like on Facebook. An ideal way to promote your business and reward your customers.
Now, what is Foursquare Day?
Foursquare day was started by Foursquare users in 2010 and was decided that 4 squared was 16 so 16 April was decided as the date to celebrate all things Foursquare. Hundreds of events get planned around the world on Foursquare Day and this year will be no different.
Foursquare does recognise these events and can provide banners etc to help publicise events planned. Some Foursquare users even get Foursquare day proclaimed officially as Foursquare day by the city/town Mayor.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg officially proclaimed April 16, 2011, "Foursquare Day," joining other mayors across America. |
